Abstract

Charles Daniel started Daniel Construction Company in 1935. He acted as president and chairman of the board and oversaw the rapid growth of the company as it advanced to become one of the larges construction companies in the world. The Charles Daniel Papers document his activities as a business executive, a community leader, and a crusader for southern industry.

Scope and Content The papers document much of Senator Brown's political life in the Democratic Party at the county, state, and national levels. He served at the national level as executive committeeman, as a delegate to conventions, and as a long time representative on the Council of State Governments. The papers illuminate his prominence as President Pro Tempore and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee from 1942-1972. This collection consists mainly of material compiled by J. C. Littlejohn for a history of Clemson College. He died before completing this project. It is a rich source of documentation on every aspect of Clemson, from information on the Calhoun and Clemson families to student life and college administration.

Introduction

T. Wilbur "Buddy" Thornhill, was a South Carolinian, a Clemson graduate, a Captain in World War I, a business man, and public servant. He was always interested in educational, agricultural, and industrial development for South Carolina. These interests and his activities qualified him for his position on Clemson's Board of Trustees.
