Foundation for Historic Preservation of Pendleton Woodburn Plantation, 1965-1970
Scope and Content Note
This series contains the correspondence and reference files maintained by the Office of the President. The files deal with a variety of topics, among them, the Athletic Council and correspondence from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association about the passage of the "1.600 rule" and the "800 rule". Minutes of the Athletic Council and other correspondence record the opposition of Clemson and the University of South Carolina to the ACC rule and the petition to ACC for abolition of the rules. In December 1970 the ACC passed an amendment to the rules which limited scholarships to students having a GPA of 1.6 and a score of 800 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test with the provision that students scoring 700-799 on the SAT and having a predicted GPA of 1.75 be eligible for admission.
Also included in the series are development files that document contributions of numerous donors, individual and corporate, for example, Strom Thurmond, Wade Stackhouse, and the Sirrine Foundation; building constructions and dedications, for example, Daniel classroom building, student dormitories, Littlejohn Coliseum, R. M. Cooper Library, Redfern Health Center, and Rhodes Engineering Research Center; faculty and staff files that contain correspondence from faculty on various subjects; student files that contain an assortment of materials, for example, a research paper about the CSS Hunley, articles, and letters; graduation and the awarding of honorary degrees; the construction of the Keowee Toxaway project in Pickens and the relocation of the Piedmont Nursery; files concerning topics related to the growth and development of South Carolina agriculture, education, forestry, and government; letters of support to President Edwards about his handling of the Vietnam Moratorium; and assorted publications of the Water Resources Research Institute. For a complete list of subjects see the "Container List" that follows.
The series is arranged alphabetically by subject. Copies of letters in poor condition have been replaced with photocopies on archival quality bond.
