Scope and Contents note

The Audio-Visual Series consists of sound discs, audio reel-to-reel and cassette tapes, a film, and a videocassette.

The items in this series spans the period 1940-1979, with the bulk of the material dating to 1945-1946, when Byrnes was Secretary of State.

The material in the series is arranged by type of material, and then chronologically by date within each box.

Most of the items in the collection come in multiple versions in different formats. Of particular interest are the recordings made of Byrne’s September 6, 1946 speech in Stuttgart, Germany which discussed United States policy towards Germany’s reconstruction; reports on various issues at the Paris Peace Conference and meetings of the Council of Foreign Ministers; and lectures by George Curry and Donald Russell on Byrnes and his role in the Cold War given on November 9, 1979. There is also a short film about Byrnes entitled “Citizen Byrnes” made by the Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation sometime in the 1950’s.
