The Oversize series contains appointments, political advertisements, articles, cartoons, certificates, honorary diplomas, a map, a print, and resolutions.

The items in this series span the period 1903-1979, with most of the material dating from 1939-1954. During this time Byrnes served as Director of the Office of War Mobilization, U.S. Secretary of State, and Governor of South Carolina.

The material in the series is arranged chronologically within each box.

The bulk of the items in this series are magazine and newspaper articles about Byrnes as Director of the Office of War Mobilization, U.S. Secretary of State, and Governor of South Carolina, as well as events during World War II and shortly afterwards. This includes the Time magazine cover from the January 6, 1947 issue when Byrnes was declared Time’s “Man of the Year.” There is a bound volume of German newspapers reporting on Byrnes’ 1946 speech in Stuttgart, Germany, in which Byrnes laid out American policy towards German reconstruction. There are also political advertisements for his campaign for governor in 1950 and Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1952 Presidential campaign.

There are political cartoons which are mainly from the period 1945-1946 and concern the Paris Peace Conference and meetings of the Council of Foreign Ministers which Byrnes attended as Secretary of State. Almost all of them are by C. K. Berryman or Jim Berryman, both of the Washington Star; a number of them are inscribed to Byrnes.

Other material of interest includes a 1944 map of “Germany and its Approaches;” a photographic copy of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, which ended World War II in the Pacific; numerous honorary degrees from South Carolina colleges and universities and others outside the state, such as Yale and Columbia; the announcement of his marriage to Maude Busch in 1906; his appointment/commission as a court stenographer in 1908, to the Supreme Court in 1941, as the Director of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion in 1944, and as governor of South Carolina in 1951; and a 1943 color print of the East Wing of the White House by H. S. Chandler and inscribed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Byrnes.
