Description
This series contains additional folders of the Subject File series, which Mr. Hartzog donated in 1993 and 1996 but were kept separate from the other material. The researcher should also consult the other series when checking on a subject matter. Most of the material in this series consists of memos, news releases, routing and follow-up slips, reports, manuals, statements, correspondence and proposed legislation. In addition, there are some newspaper and magazine articles and editorials, photographs, maps, notes, and publications such as booklets, brochures and pamphlets.
The major subjects in this series are the Personal folders, the Reading Files and the National Parks Centennial. The Personal folders consist generally of correspondence while most of the Reading Files consist of carbon copies of outgoing letters and memos. The material on the National Parks Centennial includes information on advisory committees, budget and finance, commission meetings, objectives and other miscellaneous topics. Other major subjects include Alaska, highway matters concerning the District of Columbia, the water problems of the Everglades National Park, the tower controversy at the Gettysburg National Military Park, the Glacier National Park controversy involving the transfer of Riley McClelland, a road proposal for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial’s relationship with the city of St. Louis. In addition, much material on the American Museum of Immigration, Cumberland Island, Ford’s Theatre, the LBJ [Lyndon Baines Johnson] National Historic Site and the National Park Service’s Midwest Region can be found in this series.
Some correspondence and a few manuals concerning administrative policies for America’s national parks and monuments, as well as the natural, historical and recreational areas, are filed in this series. Much correspondence with Horace M. Albright, Ronald F. Lee (Special Assistant to Director Hartzog), Frank E. Masland, Jr., members of Congress, as well as miscellaneous letters, can be found in this series. Included also are accepted invitations, memos to and from Director Hartzog and the Secretary of the Interior, as well as phone call memos, monthly reports from the Regional Directors, a briefing book for Secretary of the Interior Rogers C.
