Post Park Service, 1970 - 2008

 Series

Description

This series contains material used or received by George Hartzog after his resignation as Director of the National Park Service at the end of December 1972. Material concerning Alaska and the dedication of the George B. Hartzog, Jr. Visitor Center at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri, as well as miscellaneous correspondence, are the major subjects in this series. There is also some material on the American Revolution Bicentennial Proposed Program, the Old Post Office in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Institution, the Yosemite Institute, Hartzog’s nomination to be the President of Clemson University and the National Park Service’s 75th Anniversary. There is a book on the Statue of Liberty Exhibit and a report on the National Park Service’s response to the National Park Centennial Commission’s policy recommendations filed in this series. In addition, an oral history interview with Hartzog conducted by Janet A. McDonnell in 2005 and published in 2007, as well as obituaries and information about the George B. Jr. and Helen C. Hartzog Institute for the Parks at Clemson University, can be found here as well.

Several files within this series are marked “Alleged Conflict of Interest Case” because they contain papers concerning cases of possible conflicts of interest involving Mr. Hartzog and other individuals. One case involves a situation where George B. Hartzog, Jr. and Bernard R. Meyer were working as representatives of Landmark Services, Inc. in negotiations for a new long-term contract with the U.S. Department of the Interior. There are also a few papers concerning Hartzog and Meyer’s involvement as representatives of Government Services, Inc. In addition, there is a little material on two other conflict of interest investigations–one involving National Park Service Director William Mott, Jr. and his Special Assistant Loren Fraser and the other Aram Mardirosian, a former National Park Service employee located in this series.
