Washington, DC. Senator Strom Thurmond displays a draft card which he and Congressman L. Mendel Rivers are trying to protect from mutilation and mass burnings by demonstrators and pickets protecting U.S. involvement in Viet Nam. The legislation by the two South Carolinians would provide for punishment of 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine forany one found guilty of willful destruction, burning, or mutilation of draft registration cards. The Rivers Bill was approved by the House on August 10^th after being introduced August 5^th. The Thurmond Bill was introduced August 10^th and approved by the Senate August 13^th. The legislation was passed in almost record time, August 13, 1965

There are photographs of Thurmond with astronauts, entertainers, government officials, military officers, politicians, etc. Among the individuals appearing in this series are: Presidents Harry S. Truman through George Bush; Astronaut Alan Shepard; and foreign heads of state such as Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Other individuals include James F. Byrnes, Barry Goldwater, Fritz Hollings, Herbert Hoover, Herman Talmadge, and Prince Charles of Great Britain. Some of the photographs were autographed by the individuals when they gave the photographs to Thurmond. There are photographs of Strom Thurmond attending conferences and conventions (such as the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami, Florida), and taking trips to the Far East, Iran and Italy. Of special interest are photographs of the Anwar Sadat Funeral Trip in 1981. In addition, there are photographs of his visits to military bases such as Fort McPherson (Atlanta, Georgia), Fort Jackson (Columbia, South Carolina) and Edwards Air Force Base (California)
