Scope and Contents note

The majority of material in this series consists of articles/clippings and correspondence, although there are some lists, memos, monthly planners, notes, reports, reviews, speech material and statements. The content of this series dates from 1939 to 1999, with most of the items dating from 1966-1992.

The series is arranged alphabetically by folder title. Photographs, oversize items, and artifacts have been removed to photograph, oversize, and artifacts storage. See the Photographs Series for photographs removed from this series.

Included in this series are files documenting Dent’s chairmanship of the South Carolina Republican Party from 1965-1967; his work for the national Republican Party after he left the White House; and his involvement in the political campaigns of 1974, 1976 (for Gerald Ford), and 1980 (for George Bush and later Ronald Reagan). There is also material on Dent’s military service; files on the Watergate scandal, especially the case that led to his conviction of a misdemeanor for his part in the 1970 “townhouse operation”; items relating to his service on various groups, such as the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars; speaking invitations and schedules, as well as speech material; articles by Dent; and personal correspondence touching on legal, political, and religious matters as well as congratulations, recommendations for positions and thank you’s. Finally, there is some material relating to Republican operative Lee Atwater, U.S. President Richard Nixon, U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, and the death of his former colleague, J. Fred Buzhardt, Jr.

Important correspondents include U.S. Presidents George Bush, Gerald R. Ford, Richard M. Nixon and Ronald Reagan; South Carolina Governors Carroll Campbell and James B. Edwards; U.S. Senators Barry Goldwater and Strom Thurmond; Watergate figure H. R. Haldeman; businessman Roger Milliken; General William C. Westmoreland; and U.S. Congressman Ed Young.
