Scope and Contents

The Books series contains clippings, contracts, correspondence, first (and later) drafts, invoices, memoranda, page proofs, and postcards. The material dates from 1968-1996, with the majority dating from 1984-1992. It is arranged alphabetically by folder title. Oversize items have been removed to oversize storage.

The series contains drafts and notes for Cover up: the Watergate in all of us, which recounts Dent’s work for Richard Nixon, Watergate, and the religious lessons he learned from the scandal; Layman looks through the Bible for God’s will, an instructional work on the Bible and conservative Christian theology; Prodigal South returns to power, which describes the “Southern Strategy” and the South’s turn to the Republican Party; and Right vs. wrong, a book on character education, ethics, and morality in the United States that he wrote with his wife Betty. There are also drafts, notes, and proofs of Romanian translations of Cover up and Layman looks through the Bible for God’s will, as well as correspondence regarding the translation effort.

Much of the correspondence in the series relates to book orders, especially for Layman looks through the Bible for God’s will. There are thank you’s and some correspondence expressing opinions on a particular book, as well as some material relating to the publisher of Layman looks through the Bible for God’s will, David C. Cook Company, and proposals to the company Christians Listening to release some of the books as audiobooks. Articles and reviews of the books can also be found in this series, especially for Prodigal South returns to power.
