The Boyd Calhoun Hipp Papers document primarily his business activities at The Liberty Corporation, its subsidiaries, and its predecessors. Hipp was mainly involved in Liberty's broadcast and investment operations. The files are arranged into record series according to the specific corporation. Within each series, the records are organized in an alphabetical subject file. Some larger series, such as Liberty Life Insurance Company and The Liberty Corporation, are further divided by committees or departments, and folders related to that subdivision are arranged in an alphabetical order.

These records illustrate the planning and operations of a number of Liberty firms. There is considerable material about The Broadcasting Company of the South, Cosmos Broadcasting Corporation, and its flagship station, WIS, including minutes of meetings of Board of Directors, financial statements, balance sheets, and investment committee files. The records of Liberty Life Insurance Company include file of the numerous committees upon which Hipp served. Of particular importance are those of the finance, investment and management committees. There are also records of the Investment Division that Hipp supervised. The Surety Investment Company series includes records of the finance, investment, and management committees, balance sheets, and correspondence.

There are a few records from the following firms: Independence Insurance Company, Selico Incorporated, The Southeastern Life Insurance Company, Special Services Corporation, The Surety Insurance Company, The Surety Indemnity Company, The Surety Life Insurance Company, Surety Realty Corporation, The Liberty Corporation, Tres & Company, and Bankers Fire and Marine Insurance Company. A small series of personal papers includes material related to Hipp's activities in several professional insurance organizations and biographical material.

NOTE: Some of The Broadcasting Company of the South records were not received from the Liberty Corporation Archives with the other records of this series. These records include Accountants Report and Financial Statement, Annual Meeting, Balance Sheets, Bank Balance, Board of Director's Meetings, Broadcasting Company of the South Foundation, CATV, and Comparative Statement of Income-Radio Station WIS.
