The collection includes a negative photocopy of one record book. The book contains church records from 1796-1815 (in folder 1). Apparently it was also used as an account book by George Cooper. The section with the accounts contains a list of Negroes and their owners (in folder 2). At the end of the book there is a record of a birth, a baptism and two deaths in the Samuel James Bradley family (in folder 3). Information from first guide entry in 1968.
The Salem (Black River) Presbyterian Church was located in Sumter County, South Carolina on the Black River. The church began around 1739, but there are no authentic records until 1759. The Clerk of Sessions for the period covered by this collection was George Cooper, who was also a tailor.
