Biographical Note

Lawrence Peter Hollis was a leader in education in South Carolina. After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1905, he served first as assistant recreation director, and then recreation director for the Monaghan Mills YMCA and in 1911, director of welfare activities at the Parker Cotton Mills Co. Hollis was selected as superintendent of schools in 1923 when fourteen textile mill village schools were combined into one school district and Parker High School was founded. Under Hollis's direction from 1923-1957, Parker High school served as a model for innovative programs and the education of youth from industrial communities. Dr. Hollis was involved in a great number of community projects such as the Greenville Maternity Shelter and Camp Parker as well as church and civic organizations. While working at the YMCA, Hollis introduced the sport of basketball to Greenville and later helped organized the Textile Athletic Association.
