Scope and Contents

The March 14, 1854 letter discusses events in the life of Mr. Norton and his family. It describes the work "Gustavous" is doing at the Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel and his salary for overseeing the construction of the railroad tunnel. The "Dear Daughter" the letter is addressed to is likely to be Eliza Jane, who was married to James Hunter.

Biographical Note

Jephtha Norton was born in North Carolina on July 27, 1779, and died on February 11, 1862. He and his wife, Elizabeth Moore lived in the Pendleton District and were buried in the Old Pickens Presbyterian Churchyard.

Immediate Source of Acquisiton

The original letter was owned by a student who worked in the Clemson University Library and it was copied by Gordon Gourlay, Dean of the Library. Gourlay donated the copy to the Libraries in 1968, accession 68-12.
