Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a carbon typed copy of the minutes and treasurer's accounts of the Society for the period 1819-1824. The original Pendleton Sunday School Society records and minutes, 1819-1938 (Manuscripts I&O) at the South Caroliniana Library, University of South Carolina were copied by Mary Pope Jacobs in 1936 as part of Works Progress Administration Project 65-33-118, sponsored by the University of South Carolina and supervised by Dr. Anne K. Gregorie and Flora B. Surles.

The minutes include the organizational meeting in 1819, the quarterly director's meetings annual meetings for the period 1819-1823. These minutes note the acceptance of African-American students to the school in 1822 and include at least one report on their progress. The accounts include the names of members, dues paid and items purchased; there is also a list of individuals who subscribed to purchase a book for the Sunday school at Pickens Court House and some notes about the first meeting of that school in 1838.

Historical Note

The Pendleton Sunday School Society was founded on December 9, 1819, to establish and administer a Sunday school in Pendleton, SC. The Reverend James Hillhouse of the Hopewell (later Pendleton) Presbyterian Church was the Society's first president. The Society continued until at least 1824.
