Scope and Contents

The collection consists of photocopies of two 1845 advertisements, a photocopy of an 1841 catalog, and a carbon typed copy of the accounts, trustees minutes and other items relating to the Academy for the period 1827-1904. The original Pendleton Female Academy records, 1827-1904 (Manuscripts I&O) at the South Carolianiana Library, University of South Carolina were copied by Addie S. Vance of Columbia, SC, in 1936 as part of Works Progress Administration Project 65-33-118, sponsored by the University of South Carolina and supervised by Dr. Anne K. Gregorie and Flora B. Surles. This copy has an index created by the WPA. The minutes discuss courses, tuition, and the hiring of teachers and principals. The advertisements are for the Pendleton Female Academy and the Pendleton Male Academy. The catalog is for the 1810-1811 academic year and includes lists of trustees, teachers, students, costs and textbooks, the 1840 annual report and a handwritten poem/song. Historical Note

The Pendleton Female Academy was founded in 1827 and incorporated in 1828. The first president, elected in 1828, was Joseph V. Shanklin and the first Board of Trustees consisted of Shanklin, E.B. Benson, James O. Lewis, F. W. Symmes and Joseph N. Whitner. The Academy operated as a boarding school and classes were held at a two-story brick building originally built as a county jail. It may have been the first formal high school for girls in the state of South Carolina. The Academy was closed and the building and lot were sold in 1904 to provide funds for the Pendleton Male Academy, where a graded school had been established.
