 Collection — Box: 1

Scope and Contents

The phonodisk, which is narrated by Walter Cronkite of the Columbia Broadcasting System, begins with President John Fitzgerald Kennedy's May 25, 1961, address to Congress concerning the space program of the United States. The first side of the phonodisk then describes the lift-off from the Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969, of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Apollo 11 spacecraft carrying Edwin ("Buzz") Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins on the first manned trip to the moon; their arrival on July 20 into the lunar orbit; the separation of the lunar module Eagle with Armstrong and Aldrin aboard from the command module Columbia piloted by Collins and their landing on the moon. Voices from Mission Control in Houston are heard, as is that of Neil Armstrong as he steps onto the moon. The second side of the disk begins with Walter Cronkite describing Armstrong on the moon before Aldrin's descent. Their landing is seen on television. The voices of the other astronauts are heard as is President Richard Nixon talking to the men on the moon. Their recovery by the aircraft carrier Hornet, where they are placed for eighteen days in isolation, is described. The phonodisk is a commemorative recording provided by Union Carbide; included with the disk is a Union Carbide brochure that describes its contribution to the lunar landing.
