Harriet R. Holman Papers

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: Mss-0215

Scope and Contents

The papers consist of certificates, a diploma, photographs and copies of poems, prayers and speeches. The photocopies of poems and some of the photographs were used in the preparation of The Verse of Floride Clemson, edited by Holman and published by the University of South Carolina Press in 1965. The photocopies are of the "Prize Album", located at Fort Hill, which contains autographs from Floride's friends from 1857 and 1860-1861 and several of her poems from 1862. The photographs used in the book consist of four portraits of Floride Clemson, one of which was used as the frontispiece (there is also a galley proof of this photograph) and two photographs of a curtain that Mrs. John C. Calhoun (Floride Bonneau Colhoun) was knitting when she visited the Clemsons in 1859, one of which was used for the cover design. There are copies of a prayer and speech given at Holman's retirement party on April 29, 1978, as well as two color photographs of the event and a certificate naming her emeritus faculty of Clemson University. Also part of the papers are the June 7, 1904, diploma in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and the June 6, 1904, Columbian Literary Society certificate of her father, Arthur Elliott Holman, who was a graduate of Clemson College.
