This collection contains a photocopy of the Oath of the Pendleton Guards and a letter dated December 25, 1939 describing how the original document was discovered.
In 1908, over 300 cadets at Clemson College set out to confront new commandant J.C. Minus by staging a mass walkout on April Fools' Day. The cadets marched to nearby Pendleton, where they spent the day. While there, the cadets declared an oath stating that if any individual was expelled because of their actions, they would all leave school. They were then historically referred to as the "Pendleton Guards".
Weary of continued discipline problems, the administration promptly expelled most of the cadets from school. It would be twelve years before another such incident occurred.
