The collection contains three folders. The first includes three small notebooks that contain a timeline from when Sergeant Minick departed Norfolk, Virginia for North Africa in 1942 until his return to South Carolina in 1945, various notes to himself and postal addresses for friends and acquaintances; cards detailing Sergeant Minick's reserve status; and various official documents, commendations, assignments and retirement information. The second folder contains 17 photographs (positive prints) from Italy and a blurred photograph of Dachau, Germany. The oversized folder contains a special edition of The Newberry Observer, November 7, 2003, commemorating the World War II generation.
Drayton Leroy Minick was born December 14, 1917 in Newberry, South Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Army in September, 1941. He served with the Army Air Forces as a radar operator in North Africa, the European Theater of Operations in Italy and France, participated in the invasion of Germany, and returned home in August 1945, where he was discharged from active service at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He returned to Newberry and in 1953 reenlisted in the Army Reserves and National Guard, where he was a radar repair superintendent. He was granted retirement in 1977.
