Bob and Nellie is a novelette based in part upon the author's early life and that of his family. The author dealt with South Carolina and Massachusetts during the period 1876-1900 and hoped to help heal the sectional conflicts through this work.

Biographical Note

Charles Macbeth Cain was a student at Clemson in 1903. He worked as a pharmacist for seventy years. His paternal grandfather, William Cain, was a leader in the secession movement and enjoyed a friendship with John C. Calhoun. His maternal grandfather, Charles Macbeth, was mayor of Charleston, S.C. before, during, and after the Civil War. Family anecdotes and memories served as the basis for his novelette.

Ownership and Custodial History

This copy is one of four copies and was given by the author on March 30, 1953. Correspondence with Mrs. E.W. Cook, March 15, 1953, precedes presentation of the autographed copy and clearly indicates that it is a gift for the library or museum. The book was misplaced for a number of years but was found in April 1972 and placed in the library.
