In 1966 the Department of Recreation and Park Administration was established in the College of Education and Herbert (Herb) Brantley was named department head. In 1970, the Department of Recreation and Park Administration was joined with the Department of Forestry to become the new College of Forest and Recreation Resources. In 1975, both departments moved into the newly completed Lehotsky Hall. Prior to this move, Recreation and Park Administration was housed in Godfrey Hall and Forestry was located in the Plant and Animal Science Building.

In the early 1970s, the curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science degree allowed students to select coursework from among several emphasis areas: Community Leisure Services, Recreation Resource Management, and Therapeutic Recreation. A professional master's degree M.R.P.A. was added in 1972. A new emphasis area in Travel and Tourism at the undergraduate level and a Master of Science degree were approved by the Commission on Higher Education during the 1982-1983 school year. In 1984 the department changed its name from Recreation and Park Administration to Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM). The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree was first offered in 1986.

The department's public service programs began in 1970 when RPA established the first organized camping activities for mentally retarded citizens. A residential program, Camp Hope, was held in Aiken County and other programs were held wherever suitable facilities could be found. In 1971, an on-campus project called College Week for Senior Citizens was begun. The South Carolina Commission on Aging and the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service have supported College Week. Senior citizens were also invited to participate in camping activities at Oconee State Park from 1971-1976 at which time the project was moved to the Outdoor Laboratory. The Recreation-Outdoor Education Research Laboratory (Outdoor Lab) was constructed on a sheltered cove on Lake Hartwell about five miles south of Clemson University. The first phase of the construction was completed in 1975 and included cabins, a crafts center, picnic shelter, beaches, and a boat dock. The multi-purpose facility, Kresge Hall, was completed in 1980. The full-service dining area, conference room, and administrative offices are housed in this complex.

Dr. Herbert (Bert) Brantley retired in 1987 to accept a similar position at Indiana University. Dr. R.W. (Bob) McLellan was chosen as acting head. In 1989 Lawrence (Larry) R. Allen became head of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. Ann James became the new department head in 1996 and currently holds that position. PRTM became a part of the College of Health, Education, and Human Development in July 1995 after the university underwent a major restructuring process.
