This series includes news releases pertaining to most aspects of Clemson with the exception of the University’s Athletic Department and College of Agriculture Public Service programs. As such, information about the activities of students, staff, faculty, alumni and the Board of Trustees can be found in the news releases. They serve as an excellent source for information about newsworthy activities at Clemson from the viewpoint of the University. Frequent topics covered are awards to students, faculty and other Clemson individuals; donations to the University; new programs, research findings and campus events; and construction on campus. The seasonal events related to the academic calendar such as registration, breaks, exams and graduation are covered, as are the meetings of the Board of Trustees. There are a number of specialized releases such as “Books for Children” and “History Book Review” that were created by specific departments during the 1980s and distributed by News Services. Clemson University Archives Series 47, New Services Publications, has news releases from 1986-1992 as well as other publications.
The photographs are a variety of images related to news releases published between 1958-1959. Twelve additional photographs have been separated to the Clemson University Photograph Collection.
The Department of News Services was formed as part of the Office of University Relations beginning in 1985. Prior to that date, the Clemson office that handled media relations was first known as the News Bureau, which was established in 1933 with Joe Sherman as its first head. In 1976, the name was changed to the Clemson University Information Office and in 1983, to the Office of Information and Public Services. Over the years, the scope of the office’s activities varied to some degree although it primarily served as the liaison with the media for the University. Although the news releases primarily reflect this liaison with newspapers, the Office also worked with radio and television.
