Scope and Content Note

This series contains correspondence, memoranda, minutes of meetings, selected documentation from grant proposals, photographs, and publications. The records were produced by the department heads and faculty members of the Department of Chemistry. The series spans the years 1909-1992.

Correspondence files of the department heads comprise the bulk of the series. Major correspondents include department heads Frank Shirmer, Floyd Brownley, Garth Spencer, Rudolph Abramovitch, and John Petersen, as well as Deans Clayton Aucoin, Arnold Schwartz, and Henry Vogel.

Other significant subjects represented within the files include curriculum and degree program development, the National Science Foundation Summer Institute for teachers at the secondary level, and the renovations of Brackett Hall.

Provenance

These records originated in the Department of Chemistry. They were accessioned as 83-59, 86-77, 89-7, 95-8, 95-73, 95-140, 99-54, and 00-33. Duplicative material was removed. Other files were sampled to reduce their bulk.

Processing Information

Student assistants Ashley Abraham, Paul Hart, Maureen McHugh and Anthony Maulion processed this collection. The finding aid was completed in September 2003.

The conversion of this finding aid to Encoded Archival Description format was made possible with a grant from the South Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board in 2009-2010. The finding aid was prepared for encoding by Kristi Roberts.
