The records span the years 1957-1988; however, most of the records span 1970-1979.

The bulk of the series consists of the files of Jess W. Jones and George von Tungeln. Jones served as the Director of Resident Instruction 1953-1976. His successor, von Tungeln, became acting director in 1977 and served one year. In 1978 von Tungeln became Director of International Programs and Coordinator of Special Instructional Programs in the College of Agricultural Sciences. A small part of the records in the series relates to international programs. Two significant correspondents were Agency for International Development and the South East Consortium for International Development [SECID].

The formats of the records include correspondence, memoranda, minutes, committee files, memoranda of agreement, programs, brochures, reports and bulletins of schools of technical education within South Carolina.

Historical Note

The division of Resident Instruction in the College of Agricultural Sciences was created in 1964. Its precursor, Resident Teaching, was one of three divisions of the College of Agricultural Sciences, the other divisions being Research and Extension. Resident Instruction dealt with the teaching mission of the College of Agricultural Sciences. Within Resident Instruction were the curricula of agricultural economics, agricultural education, agricultural engineering, agronomy, animal science, biology, dairy science, entomology, food science, forestry, horticulture, poultry science, and pre-veterinary.

In 1976 Resident Instruction was renamed Instruction with little change in the function or scope of activities. Stephen Chapman served as Director. In 1988 the name was changed to Resident Instruction, again with Chapman as Director.
