Scope and Contents

The records were produced by the Campus Recreation Department and Intramural Department. The material in the collection covers the period 1969-2002 with the bulk 1969-1998.

These files document the various activities of the department such as club sports, intramurals, facilities maintenance and schedules. Assorted publications include handbooks, manuals, brochure, newsletter and ephemeral material. Major correspondents include intramural directors Jim Pope and Banks McFadden.

Administrative History

1916
The Clemson “Y” took an active part in promoting some form of intramural sports. For years these activities were supervised by P. B. Holtzendorff and his staff. [1953-1954 YMCA Handbook, p. 86.]
1926
James G. Gee, Athletic Director and Head of the Department of Physical Education
1927
Fall of 1927 the Department of Physical Education was created as an administrative unit with four divisions: intercollegiate athletics, intramural athletics, required physical education and corrective gymnastics, and professional courses.
1932
Intramural athletics at Clemson were sponsored by the college YMCA. During the session 1932-1933, company sports were directed by George Fred Kirchner, Class of 1933. Under his guidance, sports were organized on a competitive basis between companies and battalions in inter-company sports. [1933-1934 YMCA Handbook, p. 105.]
1945
When [Fred] Kirchner went to Appalachian Teachers College as Physical Director in 1945, Joe Sherman directed the work for one year.
1946-1955
John Robert Roy Cooper was in charge of the intramural program.
1955-1956
The Department of Athletics directed all intramural sports. Before this time,the intramural program was operated jointly by the YMCA and the Athletic Association. [1955-1956 YMCA Handbook.]
1957-1970
Billy “Bill” Hugh Wilhelm was hired as head coach of baseball and director of intramural sports replacing Rock Norman (Absalom Willis “Rock” Norman).
1970-1985
Banks McFadden directed intramural activities under the sponsorship of the Department of Athletics. The intramural office and equipment room were relocated to Fike Field House.
1985-2004
James R. Pope, Jr. served as Intramural Director and Director of Campus Recreation.

Provenance

These records originated with the Intramural Department and the Department of Campus Recreation. They were accessioned as 86-96, 94-85, 95-60, 98-19, 99-55, 00-46, 01-58, 01-115, and 04-41. Some files were sampled to reduce their bulk.

Processing Information

Student assistant Anthony Hampton and Archivist III Linda L. Ferry processed the series. The finding aid was completed December 2006.
