Athletic Council Records

This series forms part the records of the Athletic Council. In addition to the Council records are papers of the Clemson College Athletic Association and papers of Walter Merritt Riggs relating to athletics. The records consist of correspondence, minutes and reports and span the period 1899 through 1996. The records are arranged in four sub-series: Athletic Council records, Clemson College Athletic Association records, Walter M. Riggs Athletic papers, and Originals. Subjects represented in the records include Clemson College Athletic Association, news releases, and promotional material. Prominent correspondents include past chairs of the Athletic Council: Cecil O. Huey, Stephen Wainscott and David Senn. Correspondence of early coaches, John W. Heisman and Walter M. Riggs is also included.
The Athletic Council began in 1903, although its powers were not defined by the Board of Trustees until 1927. Over the years the size of the council increased from five to twenty-one members, some appointed by the President of the University, others elected from each College. A more detailed history is described in Series 26.

The files originated in the Clemson University Athletic Council, the Clemson College Athletic Association and papers of Walter M. Riggs.

The processing of the Athletic Council records was completed in August 2006. The Athletic Association records were processed by Jeannie Nguyen in the fall of 2006. The Riggs papers were processed by Michael Kohl at an earlier date. This finding aid was compiled by Linda Ferry, Archivist III, December 2006.
