This collection contains numerous handwritten pages either written by or to John Baker Clemson. The collection also contains newspaper clippings pertaining to John Baker Clemson including numerous on his death in 1892. The majority of the clippings are stored in plastic sleeves.

Biographical / Historical

John Baker Clemson was born in August 1803 in Philadelphia to Thomas Green Clemson III and Elizabeth Baker. He was an older brother of Thomas Green Clemson. He was an Episcopal Bishop in Pennsylvania. He had the distinction of being the oldest Episcopal clergymen of the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania at the time of his death. He was married four times to Margaret Bull, Phebe Lewis, Martha Smith and Hanna Gibbons. He died at his home at the age of 88 on February 3, 1892.
