Hartzog began creating this scrapbook in the 1940s. It contains Hartzog's memoirs and a variety of printed material documenting his career in education. Hartzog included material related to his family history and local history in Bamberg, South Carolina. There are copies of letters and recollections of events during the Civil War, particularly of the siege of Fort Sumter and Sherman's March. The memoirs include descriptions of some of his major contributions and of controversies in whic he was involved as well as accounts of his relationships with Senator Benjamin Ryan Tillman and Governor Jeff Davis. There are also copies of his speeches, newspaper articles and the pamphlets Biographical Sketch of General Lewis Ayer and The Founding and Settlement of Bamberg.
Mrs. Hartzog retains copyright to the memoirs and should be consulted before any publication of contents are undertaken.
Henry Sims Hartzog was an educator author, and businessman whose career included service as president of Clemson Agricultural College, Ouachita Baptist University and the University of Arkansas. He was president of the Arkansas State Teachers' Association and edited a number of workbooks for grade schools.
