Abstract The James F. Byrnes Papers document his career as a U.S. Senator, U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Director of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion during World War II, U.S. Secretary of State, and Governor of South Carolina. Scope and Contents The material in this series documents the Senator's campaigns from 1954 to 1978. This excludes the 1956 senatorial and the 1976 Presidential campaigns, for which no material is presently known to exist; some material on the 1960 senatorial campaign may be found in the Administrative Assistant series. The material in the Strom Thurmond Collection Gubernatorial Series includes correspondence (both official and personal), campaign material, speeches and other items documenting Strom Thurmond's term as Governor of South Carolina from 1946-1951. Correspondence, invitations, clippings and other material during the period between Thurmond's resignation from the Senate in April 1956 and his re-election to the Senate in November 1956. Includes veterans inquiries and referrels to interim Senator Thomas Wofford's office. Subjects covered include states' rights and the "bootlegging" of automobiles into Spartanburg County.

Abstract

The Pinks series was the cross-reference file for subject correspondence generated by Senator Strom Thurmond's office for the period 1954-1976 before the introduction of the centralized Correspondence Management System by the Senate Computer Center in 1976. The original cross-reference files consisted of pink colored carbon paper copies-hence, the "Pinks" series.
