Scope and Content

Miss Emily Rebecca Watkins' handsewn hymn tune book, which was probably used in a singing school, 1836 [?]. Music composition book, 45 pages, dated 1864-1865, and signed by James G. Douthit, which includes Civil War songs. Music uses shape-note hymnody, a tradition of rural American sacred music characterized by the use of unorthodox notational systems, which allow a beginner to recognize pitches from the note-head shapes without having to learn the names of keys or lines and spaces.

Dates: 1836; 1864-1865
