Scope and Contents 1 original letter August 24, 1864, and a typed copy of the letter from G. Ralph Smith, General Superintendent of State Works, Greenville, South Carolina, to Andrew P. Calhoun, Esq., Pendleton, S.C., needing "hands" for cutting wood near the railroad. He offered forty five dollars per month for "well-disposed and willing boys," some of whom might be kept as "tinkers" for blacksmiths or as labourers in the yard.
