The Photographs Series consists of digital images, photocopies, and color and black and white photographs.

The images in this series cover the period 1868-2002, with the bulk of the material documenting the personal life and political career of James F. Byrnes from 1934-1972.

The photographs are divided into two sub-series. The first sub-series contains photographs that were donated to Clemson with the original accession of papers and photographs removed from various series during the reprocessing of the collection. There are also digital copies of photographs of Byrnes from the holdings of the University of South Carolina and photocopies from the holdings of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. The second sub-series has photographs that were either transferred to Clemson from the University of South Carolina or removed from photo albums and scrapbooks from the original accession. Folders are arranged alphabetically by subject. Oversize photographs are shelved separately.

The photographs depict Byrnes during the course of his career, as well as at quiet, private moments. There are numerous photographs of his wife Maude Busch Byrnes and those depicting members of the Busch, Byrnes, Fuller, and Miner families. Also part of this series are photographs of friends and associates such as Bernard Baruch, Walter Brown, Cassie Connor, and Bill Graham; South Carolina politicians like Olin Johnston, Burnet Maybank, and Strom Thurmond; and other political figures including Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard M. Nixon.

Of particular interest are the photographs from his years as Director of War Mobilization and Secretary of State. Many prominent U.S. and international politicians are depicted, including Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, British Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and Clement Atlee, and Russia’s Premier Joseph Stalin. Photos from the Council of Foreign ministers meetings are also included, as are photographs that accompanied a diary by Edwin W. Pauley on his mission to Manchuria in 1946 which document Soviet stripping of factory equipment there for war reparations.

Other items of interest include photographs of a Congressional delegation visiting striking miners and their families in Colorado in 1914 just before the Ludlow Massacre; another Congressional trip out West in about 1920; and photographs from a trip to Haiti Byrnes and his wife took in 1938. Also part of this series are images from a report on historic buildings threatened by the Santee-Cooper Project which include pictures of Black Oak Church, Cedar Spring, Hanover House (reconstructed on the campus of Clemson University in 1941), Numerita, Ophir, and Pond Bluff. In addition there are photographs of damage along the South Carolina coast caused by a hurricane in 1940.
