Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two style books, 1949-1951, which contain technical information on various textile styles, such as weight and warp, and lists concerning both Ottaray Textiles and Haynsworth Mills; a record book of the receipts and expenditures of the Woodside Mills foundation for the period 1951-1974; and a notebook of executive position descriptions classified and evaluated by Hay Associates for Dan River, Inc., 1971-1977.

Biographical Note

Robert S. Small was born in Charleston, South Carolina on July 18, 1915. He graduated from the College of Charleston with a B.S. in 1936. He began working at the South Carolina National Bank in Pickens, S.C. that same year. He became president and treasurer of Ottaray Textiles and Haynsworth Mills in 1947. In 1951 he became vice president and director of Woodside Mills, and in 1958, its president. Small held the positions of treasurer, director, president and chief executive officer of Dan River, Inc. from 1966-1977, and became chairman and chief executive officer in 1977.
