The Mell scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and printed material document primarily the period when Patrick Hues Mell served as Clemson College president, 1902-1910. There are clippings from the major state newspapers as well as some smaller local and out-of-state newspapers. A variety of invitations to commencements, dances, lyceum programs, dramatic offerings, presentations, and the various programs of the College's literary societies are also included in the scrapbooks. The clippings deal with Clemson College's activities in areas such as agricultural extension, the School of Textiles, athletic events, social events at the college, Trustees' meetings, and Dr. Mell's resignation.
Patrick Hues Mell served as President of Clemson College from 1902-1910. His wife, Anne White Mell, was an active participant in the social life at Clemson. She apparently organized scrapbooks documenting Clemson during her husband's presidency.

In 1955, Bessie Mell Poats Lane accepted this collection for Clemson from Patrick Mell's brother, E.B. Mell of Athens, Georgia. Dr. Jack K. Williams, Clemson history professor, used these papers to begin writing a history of Clemson. In April 1966, when Dr. Williams took another position, the papers were sent to the Library.
